After pondering my last post “The Real Definition of ‘Web 2.0″, I figured I needed to act quickly. After all, I already live in Chicago and I’ve been programming in Python and JavaScript for years. And besides, I thought it would be cool to work for Google someday…
So last week, not wanting to miss the Web 2-oh bandwagon, I registered a valid “web 2.0″ domain name (42nouns.com). Now I need to spend a weekend writing some code, and watch the ad revenue and monthly subscriptions start pouring in…
But before that happens, I need some help from you, dear reader. So…. dear potential monthly subscriber to 42nouns.com, what should the site do for you? This is Web 2.0 at its best– the nascent 42nouns.com community gets to decide what 42nouns.com will be!
In other words, 42nouns.com is the answer— now, what’s the question?
The person (or ‘bot!) with the best answer will get a 3 months free subscription to 42nouns.com!
P.S. 42nouns.com franchises are available for your local city. (la.42nouns.com, newyork.42nouns.com, etc.)
42nouns.com Features:

A site where the best user submitted Vogon poetry gets a towel.
But since that doesn’t look too ‘Web-2-oh-y’, a better idea would be a site where users send questions about “Life, the Universe and Everything”, and then the rest of the community collaborately tries to come up with an answer a’la Wiki style.
I’ll start with the first question:
What to do when you feel like your brain is rotting and have lost all productivity by stopping at any blog that crosses in your path??

What’s Design Patterns doing in there?

This is eerie. Earlier today my idea for a “Huester” service where you share your favorite colors with tags and RSS feeds and Ajax got shot down… because there are two of them already.
Anyway, I see three things missing:
Bookmarklets. You might need a cute new verb to describe what one does to a noun with the bookmarklet.
An API and developer resources. Even if 95% of your users have no idea what they are. Major cred. No SOAP.
Friending. Friending is a must.
If you put me on your board of advisors I promise to include a prominent disclaimer every time I mention 42nouns.com. (“Disclaimer: I am on the advisory board of 42nouns.com, which is awesome.”)

Thinking this over, I’m not so sure about the choice of Ruby. It seems so Web 2.0.0. 42nouns.com really should differentiate itself as Web 2.0.3 at least. So I’m thinking that you should try something like Lua on Bobsled Run or Haskell on Alpine Slide or Erlang on Splash Mountain.

Paul,
Lua on Bobsled Run, et al… Genius! I like it… I would never be interested in learning something called “Erlang”, but “Erlang on Splash Mountatin”?– now that’s something I just got to see!

42nouns.com better get out of the gate soon! I’ve already soft-launched my competing Web 2.0 power play, numbr.com, with a wide array of REST-based services including avogadro.numbr.com, myip.numbr.com, week.numbr.com, rfc.numbr.com, and random.numbr.com. For our web framework we’re using PHP on a Shingle, but may switch to Django.
